Using antiseptic mouthwash daily might do more than “kill germs.” Certain bacteria on your tongue convert dietary nitrates (from foods like spinach, arugula, beets) into nitrite, which your body uses to make nitric oxide — a molecule that helps blood vessels relax and regulate blood pressure. Strong antibacterial mouthwashes can disrupt that pathway. In a controlled human study, 7 days of chlorhexidine mouthwash reduced oral nitrite production by ~90% and was associated with a small but significant increase in blood pressure.
