Johannesburg🇿🇦 to London 🇬🇧 to Barcelona🇪🇸✈ : 19-23 July 2002 Speedbird #BA56 B747-436 (G-BNLI) boarding at Gate A11 sporting 'Benyhone' ethnic tail livery. Flying time: 11 hrs 5 min G-BNLI delivered to British Airways in 1990 in Landor livery named ‘City of Sheffield’, painted in ‘Benyhone’ ethnic livery in 1999, painted in ‘Oneworld’ livery in 2003, withdrawn from service in 2009, stored at VCV and scrapped in 2018😭 I checked-in in at BA Departures, went through and immigration, and headed to Caffé Ritazza, a great place to relax as i enjoyed a nice view of my plane at the gate. When boarding began, i stepped from the jetway and proceeded to Row 44K with a seatback IFE touchscreen, window seat in ‘World Traveler’ in 2-3-2 configuration. Push-back was on schedule as the safety video played, and we taxied along Alpha to holding point 21R all the way to the threshold. After clearance, the engines powered to take-off power thrust and we began to roll down, and were soon airborne climbing over the brightly-lit city before turning right and north into the darkness of the night. The cabin lights switched on after we reached cruising altitude; shortly after the crew served drinks and took dinner orders. There was a choice between curry chicken and cheese pasta; i opted for Chicken Tikka Masala with rice, a bread roll and salad, and cheesecake for dessert as i watched ‘The French Connection’. Service items were collected promptly and the cabin darkened for passengers to sleep. I watched one more movie and managed to get three hours of sleep. I woke up as the crew was serving breakfast 90 min before landing: omelette, sausage, grilled tomato, bacon, fruit salad, juice and tea. Soon we were on descent on a flight path along the winding River Thames westwards over Central London starting with Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Millenneum Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Hungerford Bridge next to the London Eye, Westminster Bridge adjacent to the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey behind, Lambeth Bridge, Grosvenor Bridge, Chelsea Bridge, and Battersea Bridge. Our final approach to Heathrow took us over Kew, Richmond, Twickenham Rugby Stadium , The Causeway between the two balancing reservoirs, and spotted Concorde G-BOAB parked at BA Engineering at Hatton Cross, the A30/Great South-West Road and the Southern Perimeter before touching down on 27L. We taxied along Sierra and Whiskey to Terminal 4 docking next to a B767. I deplaned through Club World section and had a quick look in “First” before stepping out on the the jet bridge to Arrivals. Having already secured my boarding pass to Barcelona when i checked-in in Johannesburg, i followed ‘Flight Connections’ signs to a shuttle bus that transported us to Terminal 1 where i cleared security and checked my gate number & departure time on the screens. After a short wait at the gate, a bus took us to our aircraft parked at a remote stand and boarded on air stairs. London Heathrow to Barcelona boarding at Gate 4 Flight time: 2hr 15min Speedbird #BA474 A319-100 (G-EUOA) G-EUOA delivered to British Airways in 2001, withdrawn from service in June 2025 and scrapped at St Athan, Cardiff in Dec 2025. After a warm welcome by the crew, i hiked through Club Europe to Row 18F window seat in Eurotraveller in 3-3 configuration. Legroom was not great but ok for a short flight. We push-backed on schedule, safety video on as we taxied to 27L for takeoff and airborne within minutes past the new T5 under construction. Queen Mother Resevoir soon after fast climbing as we turned left and headed south reaching the coast of England within minutes. Shortly after reaching cruising altitude, the crew came around offering drinks and snacks as we made our way over Andorra and the Pyrenees - excellent service from BA crew as always, professional and friendly. With our plane on decent, the cabin was cleared as we burst through the clouds on our final approach over the coastline, before lining up for 24L and were soon wheels-down and taxiing to Terminal 2. There was a 30 min wait for immigration and my bag came out shortly after. I took a short walk across to the train station and boarded RENFE R2 Nord line to the city, 30 min trip and got off underground at Plaça de Catalunya above the city’s central square where i took a quick stroll around. I headed back underground and boarded Ferrocarrils Catalans (FGC) S2 Line, 45 min journey to Bellaterra in Cerdanyola del Vallès and got off at UAB (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona) station. A 15-min stroll from the station takes you along scenic surroundings to Vila Universitària, a residential complex within the campus located at Plaça Cívica for Master’s and PhD students with self catering accommodation. I checked-in and registered for the Joint BACA and Spanish Anatomical Society Meeting, 22-23 July 2002, organized by the university. The highlight of the meeting was the gala dinner on the final day at which i received a warm welcome.
