After four lovely days in Atami, I decided to stop by Shizuoka for two days before heading back, as I was already running out of time. One of the places I made sure to visit was the biggest park in the city, Sunpu Castle Park, the main historic green space of Shizuoka. I wanted to simply enjoy the fresh, cool winter air and take in the peaceful surroundings. The wide open grounds and historical atmosphere made it the perfect spot to slow down and appreciate the season. While walking back toward the city center square, I happened to arrive just in time for a local winter festival. People were carrying a portable shrine, known as a mikoshi, chanting together as they moved through the streets. There were symbolic activities like throwing sweets for good fortune, and even a dragon figure that added a festive and cultural touch to the celebration. It felt like such a lucky and unexpected experience. Later on, I passed by a much smaller park, Tokiwa Park, a charming urban space with fountains and relaxing areas, a quiet contrast to the earlier festivities. To end my day, I spotted a seasonal ice skating rink set up in the city square, a winter attraction that added a magical vibe to the evening atmosphere. Overall, despite it being a short and quick trip, I managed to explore the city and at least begin discovering the beauty and charm of Shizuoka.
