I Traveled to New Zealand for One Ride... It Ended in Disaster

Join me for an epic day of Christchurch cycling as I take on the iconic Long Bay Loop and the legendary Dyers Pass in New Zealand. This NZ cycling vlog explores the best roads in the South Island before a major mechanical disaster 49km in leads to my first ever Uber of shame. You made it this far, well here's the full recap... This time I’m heading to Christchurch, New Zealand, to tackle the iconic Long Bay Loop and the legendary Dyers Pass climb! After six years of zero overseas travel, this year has been a massive year for new roads, and I couldn’t visit NZ for a wedding without getting at least one epic ride in. Christchurch cycling is genuinely insane. The scenery is some of the most picturesque I’ve ever experienced—honestly comparable to the incredible roads I found in Japan earlier this year. The roads are buttery smooth, and while the climb up Dyers Pass definitely put me in the hurt locker, the views from the summit make every single watt worth it. Usually, my rides are fuelled by a classic sausage roll, but in New Zealand, the pie is king. I stopped into Lyttelton for a mid-ride refuel at Hope River Pie Shop to try their Steak, Red Wine, and Cheese pie. It was a great snack, but I'm still on the hunt for the absolute best pie in the country... let me know in the comments where I should head next time! But the ride didn't end exactly as planned. At the 49km mark, disaster struck with a catastrophic chain drop that left me completely stranded on the side of the road. For the first time in my cycling life, I had to call the "Uber of Shame" to get back home. It was a gut-wrenching way to end such a beautiful day, but sometimes the bike just wins. A huge thank you to the team at Scotty Browns for looking after me after the carnage. They got a new chain fitted and gave the bike the official tick of approval for no frame damage, which was a massive relief! This ride perfectly captures the highs and lows of cycling in New Zealand—from stunning natural landscapes and challenging climbs to the occasional mechanical nightmare.
