Kaitlin Deans is a Sophomore Biology, Music major in the Randall Research Scholars Program (RRSP). Their research project presentation, "Neural Correlates of Dissociative States Associated with Trauma Among Former Foster Youth," was completed under the advisement of Dr. Lindamarie Olson from the School of Social Work Department. Project Description: The aim of this fMRI investigation is to identify neural correlates of dissociative states that are associated with trauma symptom provocation among former foster youth by using script-driven imagery. Prior to the scanning session, participants will respond to a series of standardized measures assessing mental and behavioral health outcomes. The study will also involve MRI data collection including functional MRI during a script-driven imagery paradigm as well as structural fMRI. Research aims include: 1) Identify neural correlates of dissociative states in response to trauma symptom provocation among former foster youth, 2) Examine the correlations between dissociative states in response to trauma script versus positive and neutral scripts and 3) Examine the correlation between dissociative states and mental health outcomes.
