Back in December, I found myself up in Auckland, and with little to do during my final few hours there, I figured it would be worthwhile checking out what I could find. Before long, I bumped into the rubbish truck (think Volvo Raptor) run by local contractor Green Gorilla; however, I soon abandoned it in favour of this Frankenstein on recycling. Seen here is a 2017 Hino, mounted by a 24m Manco body recently retrofitted with a Raptor arm. Run by EnviroWay, a brand of EnviroWaste to do with the recycling side of their operations I believe, I caught up with the truck on a Monday morning collecting the blue and yellow-topped bins in the inner-city with a pretty easy-going driver at the helm. With minimal set out in the way of recycling and time of the essence, I quickly took these clips before heading home. While in the heart of the CBD waste and recycling are collected using pre-paid bags, on the fringes of the city, many smaller businesses are provided with wheelie bins for their refuse and recyclables. That being said, it is still a mystery to me exactly who is entitled to these bins as a decent number of streets had only a couple out for collection, making this video bloody difficult to capture. In this small handful of bins presented the quality of recycling was far from incredible, and the same can be said about some of the bin placement, which was only worse when the camera wasn't rolling. EnviroWay runs a fleet predominantly made up of larger versions of this truck, with a couple of Bucher GenVs mixed in. All of these, aside from a small handful, are mounted on Hino chassis like that viewed in this video and collect the recycling from a third of the city (the remaining two areas are collected by Smart Environmental and JJ's.) As EnviroWaste has moved away from utilising locally made side-arms, now favouring the Aussie built SuperiorPak brand, it makes sense to see them replacing the Manco arm with a more practical and readily available model. I can't confidently say how many have seen this Frankenstein modification; however, a couple of photos floating around lead me to believe it is more than just this unit T970. This SL85/Raptor combo seems to go alright, with there only being the occasional moment where the arm seems to have a mind of its own. Cheers to the laid back driver for letting me take a couple of clips, enjoy,,, Please note that under NO CIRCUMSTANCE is any of the footage seen here to be used against the driver(s) and/or contractor(s). This video is for entertainment purposes, not to critique nor shine a poor light on any of the involved parties. Should there be any issues, please contact me.
