Hike to Laguna Churup and Laguna Churupita Huascaran National Park, Huaraz (Ancash), Perù Trailhead: Pitec October 2022 Link to the Alltrails itinerary: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/rec... Itinerary: From the parking area in Pitec the trail is broad and very clear all the way to Laguna Churup. It is a busy trail. There is a manned park entrance where park rangers collect the entrance fee or check the multi-day pass for the Huascaran National Park. The direct trail to Laguna Churup is steep and fairly hard in some parts and it also has a couple of sections with steel chains and metal cables aids to climb up relatively short stretches of rock walls. An easier and a bit longer alternative route leads to the Mirador Churup and from there down to the Laguna. I took the alternative route on the way back which added variety and different view points for the Laguna, the Nevado Churup and the Valley. From Laguna Churup the trail to Laguna Churupita runs along the Northern shore of Laguna Churup then climbs up the moraine and descend to the smaller Laguna Churupita. It is less than a mile one way. The entire hike from Pitec and back was 5.7 mi with 2,648 ft of elevation gain. Max elevation: 4576 m, 15,015 ft. Hike notes: The hike to Laguna Churup is among the most popular hikes in the Cordillera Blanca. This is due to the vicinity of it to the city of Huaraz and the relatively short ride that it takes to get to the trailhead in Pitec from the city. It is also a relatively short day hike. Consequently, it is a busy hike. It is certainly well worth it as both the Laguna Churup and the Nevado Churup towering over the Laguna offers beautiful views. The hike to the Laguna and back is relatively short but it presents a decent amount of elevation gain and it is steep in some part, so it is probably a good idea to do it after a couple of days of acclimatization to altitude. The trail offers good variety of views of the valley and the Cordillera Negra particularly if both the main route and the alternative route are hiked. Laguna Churup is beautiful but always busy. I really enjoyed the one mile hike to Laguna Churupita, which is a small Laguna right under the Nevado Churup. Churupita looks wilder and higher alpine terrain. Small but truly beautiful. Very few people make the effort to go up the moraine to Laguna Churupita: In fact I had it all for myself for about 30 minutes and I took my lunch break there. The visit to Churupita was well worth it and added interest and beauty to an otherwise short day hike.
