This talk explores the complex interplay between our personal histories and workplace dynamics, emphasizing how the invisible influences from our early lives shape our behaviors and interactions at work. Through relatable anecdotes, it highlights the assumptions we make about others and the meanings we attach to situations, revealing that the "invisibles" from our past often drive organizational culture and performance. The talk argues for the necessity of psychological safety in fostering open dialogue, innovation, and trust within teams. By promoting leadership that values emotional intelligence and soft skills, organizations can better navigate conflicts and create environments where all members feel valued, engaged, and empowered. Samira Nuhanovic is the founder & CEO of North Star Consulting, a company focused on creating resilience in organizations and individuals. She has more than sixteen years of experience supporting people and organizations' development in diverse, international and local contexts. From setting up the social business incubator to designing leadership programs, and managing an IT company, Samira's work focuses on understanding the innate capabilities of teams and how to align them to the organizational values to allow for maximum impact. Samira holds an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in cooperative economics from the European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises affiliated with the University of Trento in Italy. In an attempt to understand the intrinsic drives of team performance, Samira started studying Transactional Analysis and currently also works as a TA practitioner with focus on using TA concepts in organizational contexts. She authored and co-authored several scientific articles and book chapters of which the most notable is her contribution to the Oxford Handbook of Mutual, Co-operative and Co-owned Businesses. In 2019, in collaboration with the Brain Child Collective, a Chicago based company, Samira helped launch an initiative in Bosnia that provides young professionals with tools to discover their strengths and hone their leadership skills. Samira loves traveling, conceptually between different disciplines and literally between different places. She believes in the transformative power of leadership & followership. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
