The Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS) was formed by a public meeting in 1984. The objective was to save the Mornington line, which was being threatened with closure. The MRPS purchased K163 from the Apex club of Frankston and set about restoring the locomotive for mainline operation. K163 was restored and in 1986 was issued with a boiler certificate while in Jubilee Park, Frankston. The locomotive was then moved by road to the Lysaghts sidings where the restoration was completed. The MRPS operated it's first public trips on Saturday 23rd of April 1988 between Hastings and Stony Point, as shown in this video. The Society later relocated to HMAS Cerberus during 1989 where it continued to operate mainline trips on the Mornington Peninsula and further afield. The MRPS was issued an order in council to operate the Mornington line from Baxter to Mornington (Yullies Road) in 1991 and restoration of the line progressed with trolley rides commencing shortly thereafter. The MRPS was asked to vacate the HMAS Cerberus site during 1997. On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of October 1997 the MRPS moved all of its rolling-stock from HMAS Cerberus to Moorooduc. The MRPS reopened the line to the new Mornington terminus in 1999 and now operates a successful Tourist & Heritage Railway between Moorooduc and Mornington. The Society's ambition is to fully restore the line back to Baxter in the future and further develop the Mornington Railway into a major tourist attraction on the Mornington Peninsula.
