Steam locomotives were supposed to be history by the 1950s—but then came Superpower Steam. In this episode of Rail Weekly, we dive into the last great evolution of steam technology, when engineers pushed their limits to create faster, stronger, and more efficient machines. While most railroads rushed to adopt diesel, two bold outliers—the Norfolk & Western and the Nickel Plate Road—doubled down on steam. With deep ties to coal and a belief in steam's untapped potential, they unleashed some of the most powerful locomotives ever built, like the iconic J-Class 4-8-4s and the legendary Berkshire 2-8-4s. And the story doesn’t stop in the past. I got the chance to ride behind Nickel Plate Road 765—a living, breathing example of Superpower Steam in action. From its wartime origins to its modern-day revival by a team of dedicated volunteers, this machine still roars down the rails, inspiring a new generation of steam lovers. You'll ride with me in a car that once carried circus elephants, hear the borrowed whistle of another steam legend, and learn how you can be part of preserving these iron giants. 🚂 Tap the link below to support the restoration of NYC Mohawk No. 3001 and help keep steam history alive! However, they were heavily promoting the restoration and fundraising efforts for the NYC 3001 on the day of the excursion, hence the confusion.
