After surviving a 2015 car accident that leaves him with fatal brain damage, Simon Jarrett undergoes an experimental brain scan—only to awaken seemingly decades later at the abandoned underwater facility PATHOS-II. Guided by Catherine Chun, who reveals he is actually in the year 2104 after a comet wiped out most life on Earth, Simon learns that his consciousness is a digital copy implanted into a robotic body, created by the WAU, a rogue AI obsessed with preserving humanity at any cost. As Simon journeys through the ruined ocean installations, encountering machines that believe they are human, he discovers the ARK: a digital sanctuary designed to preserve human minds in a simulated world and launch them into space as humanity’s final legacy. Forced to confront unsettling truths about identity, continuity of consciousness, and sacrifice—including leaving versions of himself and others behind—Simon helps recover and launch the ARK despite the collapse of PATHOS-II.
