Pushparani was raised in a small bedroom in a low cost flat in Taman Bukit Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Her Indian mother, Palaniamah Muthan, came from a very poor upbringing and only had formal education until she was ten. She started working in the rubber tapping estates to help her family and then as a cleaner for most of her life. Her Chinese father, Ho Weng Foo, and Palaniamah had an estranged relationship and he was never around as a father to support her. Despite being married to each other, her parents were living separate lives. When questioning her ethnicity, Pushparani never knew about the word ‘Chindian’ until she was an adult. Whenever Pushpa had asked her Mum, she was told ”you are Chinese, and tell that to whoever that ask you.” Pushpa used to be puzzled about it, but Palaniamah would just reply flatly, “Your Dad is Chinese, so you are Chinese.” Even with her Indian relatives, she hardly thought of herself as part Indian although Palaniamah and her prayed to the Hindu gods and attended church. For Pushpa, growing up was certainly a confusing time. To read Pushparani's story: www.cowbird.com/thechindiandiaries
