The Coon Rapids photo preservation initiative, titled “Coon Rapids Through the Lens: A Historic Photo Archive,” began in 2024 as a partnership between MSCR and UNI. The project aims to save, digitize, and publicly share thousands of images. UNI’s high-resolution scanning process (1,300 ppi) ensures that the resulting images are suitable for historical research, display, publication, and artistic use. The Fortepan IA portal features a searchable timeline, crowd-sourced tagging tools, customizable albums, and downloadable high-resolution files. The Coon Rapids archive has been embedded directly into the city’s website: https://coonrapidsia.municipalone.com... Using the Fortepan Iowa website is simple. Visitors can search the collection by year, last name, or subject. Every image is available as a high-resolution download, suitable for everything from large wall graphics and museum-quality prints to small projects like postcards, scrapbooks, or social media posts. All Fortepan Iowa photos are free to download and reuse under a Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike 4.0 license. Users must credit Fortepan Iowa with every photo used. The site also includes interactive tools such as FotoStory, making the portal a powerful, user-friendly way to connect with Coon Rapids’ visual history. Fortepan Iowa—founded in 2015 at UNI—specializes in preserving and sharing everyday Iowa life through donated community photo collections. The platform is widely celebrated for its ease of use, public accessibility, and community-engaged approach to historical storytelling.
