As Lamu Youth Assembly continues its mission of amplifying the voices of young people across the county, today’s Youth Baraza at Bahari Ward brought together a powerful gathering of Youths, the Area Chief, and the Ward Administrator representing the County Government of Lamu. This Baraza created a safe and open space for young people to speak boldly about the realities shaping their daily lives. The conversations were honest, emotional, and deeply reflective of the challenges facing today’s generation. Among the major issues highlighted by the youth of Bahari Ward include: 🔹 Rising Unemployment, pushing many young people into crime and risky survival options. 🔹 Drug and Substance Abuse, now a growing crisis affecting families and the future of our community. 🔹 High Business Licensing Costs, making it difficult for young entrepreneurs to start and sustain businesses. 🔹 Lack of Bursaries and Scholarship Opportunities, hindering access to education for many. 🔹 Inadequate Medicine and Poor Medical Services at Mpeketoni Hospital, leaving the community vulnerable. 🔹 Absence of Recreational Centers, limiting safe and productive spaces for youth development. 🔹 Weak Public Participation, where youth are often unheard in key decision-making spaces. 🔹 Insufficient Talent-Nurturing Facilities, causing many gifted youth to lose hope in pursuing their passions. 🔹 Limited Opportunities in the Agriculture Sector, despite its potential to create income and employment. 🔹 Need for Youth-Friendly Policies, grounded in real issues and lived experiences. But one of the most disturbing and urgent takeaways was 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐦𝐮. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬—𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. Today, the youth reaffirmed that they are not just beneficiaries of development—they are partners, leaders, and drivers of change. The Youth Baraza is more than a meeting; it is a movement of hope, accountability, and collective action. Together, we are shaping a future where every young person in Lamu County feels seen, supported, and empowered. #lamuyouthassembly #youthbaraza #bahariward #YouthVoices #youthempowerment #mentalhealthmatters This Is being implemented by The Oslo Center in partnership with Lamu Youth Assembly supported by Vänsterns Internationella Forum
