DMZ Art & Peace Platform 스튜디오 아더 스페이시즈 올라퍼 엘리아슨 그리고 세바스찬 베흐만 물방울 퍼빌리온 2017, 목재, 합성 메쉬, 스테인리스 스틸, 철, 62×148×124cm, 작가 제공 Studio Other Spaces Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann Condensation pavilion 2017, Wood, synthetic mesh, stainless steel, wire 62×148×124cm Courtesy of the artist 〈물방울 퍼빌리온은 바람, 안개, 숲이 함께 모여 고요한 공간을 만들어 내는 환경, 그 자체로 구성된다. 이 퍼빌리온은 장소에서 자연스럽게 생기는 안개를 모아서 그것을 물방울로 응결시키고, 소용돌이치는 여울로, 강으로 흘러들어 비무장 지대를 가로질러 강으로 사라지게 되면서, 주변 환경의 순환과 직접적으로 관계를 맺는다. 〈물방울 퍼빌리온〉은 최재은 작가가 시작한 《자연국가(自然国家)》 프로젝트의 일부로 제작되었다. 건축과 디자인을 이용해 남북의 분단을 이어주는 이 프로젝트는 비무장 지대에 세워지는 야외 ‘정자’ 명상 퍼빌리온들로 구현되는데, 다양한 정자들은 수많은 지뢰가 있는 비무장 지대의 도보 육교 다리로 서로 연결되어 있다. 〈물방울 퍼빌리온〉을 구성하는 각각의 고리는 대나무 가닥들을 꼬아서 만들었으며, 안개에서 수분을 모을 수 있도록 디자인한 섬유망은 빛에도 섬세하게 반응할 수 있도록 대나무 고리로 프레임이 된다. 섬유망에서 만들어지는 작은 물방울은 퍼빌리온의 중앙에서 흐르는 작은 개울로 퍼져 나가면서 북한과 남한을 나누는 임진강에 이르게 된다. 인간이 개입할 필요 없이, 날씨가 직접 안개 수확의 과정들을 촉발시킨다. 퍼빌리온 디자인의 핵심은 걷는 행위에 있다. 퍼빌리온의 구조는 길을 따라 있는 고정된 단일 지점이 아니라, 풍경 속으로의 여정과 함께 변화하는 시점들을 따르게 한다. 관람자들이 도보 육교 다리를 따라 이동하면 퍼빌리온은 구체화되고 진화한다. 참여자들이 어떤 방향으로 접근하더라도 겉으로 보기에는 흩어져 보이는 고리의 배치가 하나의 대칭적 패턴을 형성하는 지점에 이르게 된다. 이는 남쪽과 북쪽에서 오는 관람객들 모두 공유하는 조화의 비전이다. Condensation pavilion is made of its own environment: the wind, the fog, and the forest come together to create a tranquil space. The pavilion engages directly with the cycles of the surroundings, collecting the fog that occurs naturally on site and condensing it into a spiralling stream that flows into the passing river, crosses the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and disappears into the sea. Condensation pavilion is part of the larger project Dreaming of Earth, initiated by artist Jae-Eun Choi, which aspires to use architecture and design to bridge the divide between South and North Korea, making peace. The project envisions a series of open-air ‘Jung Ja’ meditation pavilions built of and in the DMZ and connected by a pedestrian bridge elevated above the thousands of landmines below. Made from entwined strands of bamboo, each ring of Condensation pavilion frames a shimmering sheet of fabric mesh designed to capture moisture from the fog. The water droplets that form on the mesh are then channeled into a small stream that flows from the centre of the pavilion, coiling outward until it reaches the Imjin River, which divides South and North Korea. The weather directly triggers this process of fog harvesting, with no need for human involvement. Central to the pavilion’s design is the act of walking. The structure is not conceived to be a single, static point along the path, but rather to follow the shifting perspectives of a journey through the landscape. As visitors move along the bridge, the pavilion materialises and evolves.
