This video shows the viewer the 5 ways to prevent hypothermia from setting in, if the patient is on the ground and not mobile. Step 1. Prevent heat loss caused by conduction to a cold surface. See how to slide a sheet under the patient with minimal movement. Step 2. Prevent heat loss caused by evaporation. If the patient is in wet clothing then this needs to be removed. In this video, the clothing is dry, the patients skin is dry. Step 3. Prevent heat loss by radiation. Add extra layers to insulate the patient as much as possible. Step 4. Prevent heat loss by convection. Being exposed to the wind takes heat away, as does rain and even worse, being in water. Protect the patient from these elements. Step 5. Gentle rewarming. If the patient is able to eat food and have a warm drink this will increase the patients core temperature as the food is metabolised. Shared body heat also works well.
