In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Bangladesh Liberation War In 1971. By 14th December it was apparent that Pakistan is going to lose the war. On the same day Pakistan Army along with its local collaborator groups, most notably the extreme right wing Islamist militia group Al-Badr, started the the systematic execution of Bengali pro-liberation intellectuals. Intellectuals were killed throughout the duration of war but 14 December is especially heinous as the act was done in order to hurt the future of a new nation. The largest number of executions took place on 25 March and 14 December 1971, as it became apparent that Bangladesh could become independent. 14 December is commemorated in Bangladesh as Martyred Intellectuals Day.
