Angry leaders of Venezuela's largest business and labour confederations accused President Hugo Chavez's government of violating every norm guaranteeing freedom of expression with its broadcasts showing people at work, pro-government rallies, and claims that all was calm. By law, all media must broadcast government transmissions and dozens were forced upon them on Monday and Tuesday. Vice President Diosdado Cabello accused Venezuela's news media of conspiring to destabilise Chavez's government. Fedecamaras and the (m) million-member Venezuelan Workers Confederation called the 24-hour strike to support a work slowdown at the government oil monopoly Petroleos de Venezuela, whose managers are protesting against top management appointed by Chavez on February 25. The slowdown has had oil markets on alert following Iraq's decision to stop oil exports for 30 days to demand that Israeli forces abandon Palestinian territories. The secretary general of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) warned on Monday that Venezuela's disruptions and Iraq's action could create an oil crisis. Iraq and Venezuela jointly export about 4.5 (m) million barrels of oil per day. Venezuela alone exports nearly one (m) million barrels of crude daily to the United States. Chavez supporters clashed briefly with opposition leaders, including Democratic Action party leader Rafael Martin, outside the National Assembly before National Guard troops intervened.
