Living in Japan has made the country’s declining population feel very real to me. Reading about it in articles is one thing, but actually seeing the effects in our own neighbourhood is something else entirely. Since moving here, we’ve already attended three funerals, and most of the people living around us are in their 60s and 70s. It makes me wonder what the future will look like for our small community of just twenty households. At the same time, there are also hopeful signs. Gunma is becoming one of Japan’s top relocation areas, and there seems to be a lot of construction and investment happening nearby. Maybe new people and families will move in and help keep the area alive.
