What if buildings could be stronger, safer, and more sustainable—all while weighing less? In this talk, Mohammad Qasim Panahy explores how lightweight concrete is transforming construction in earthquake-prone regions like Afghanistan. By reducing structural weight by up to 30%, this innovative material improves seismic safety, enhances thermal and acoustic comfort, and enables faster, more efficient construction. Beyond performance, lightweight concrete offers environmental and economic benefits, from energy savings to local production opportunities using abundant clay resources. This talk explores how this breakthrough technology is reshaping the future of engineering, building safer cities, and protecting generations to come. Mohammad Qasim Panahy is a university lecturer and the Head of Quality Assurance at Avicenna University. With more than thirteen years of experience in higher education, he has served in various academic and leadership roles, including seven years as Vice-Chancellor and two years as chancellor of Avicenna University. Mr. Panahy holds a Master’s degree in Structural Engineering from Kashan University and has published research on concrete materials in collaboration with Sharif University of Technology in Iran. He is passionate about advancing education, promoting scientific thinking, and inspiring young minds to pursue knowledge with purpose. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
