Chandragupta Maurya (c. 340–297 BCE) was the founder of the Mauryan Empire in India and one of the first rulers to unite much of the subcontinent under a single state. Rising from obscure origins with the guidance of his adviser Chanakya, he overthrew the Nanda dynasty in Magadha and then expanded aggressively across northern India. He also confronted the successors of Alexander the Great, eventually defeating Seleucus I and securing territory in exchange for peace and alliance. His reign laid the foundations of a powerful centralized empire, with organized administration, taxation, and a standing army. Chandragupta turned conquest into durable statecraft—the rare trick that keeps empires from collapsing like soggy scaffolding.
