Surgery for bone sarcomas – what you need to know Bone sarcomas are rare tumors that usually require complex treatment. In this video, Prof. Dr. Dimosthenis Andreou, an experienced tumor orthopedist at the West German Cancer Center in Essen, explains how modern surgeries are planned and performed – and when limb preservation is possible. Here you can find the original German version of this video: • Knochensarkom‑OP: Wie Operation, Rekonstru... What you can expect in the video: ✔ Prerequisites for surgery Before surgery, a complete and up-to-date diagnosis is necessary. Why imaging before surgery is so crucial – especially after chemotherapy or a long time since the initial diagnosis. ✔ Chemotherapy before surgery? For osteosarcomas and Ewing's sarcomas, the combination of surgery and chemotherapy is standard. Prof. Andreou explains when chemotherapy is useful, how it works, and why it does not always lead to visible tumor reduction. ✔ Finding the right center – that's crucial Surgery for bone sarcoma should be performed by experienced professionals. Why specialized sarcoma centers (e.g., certified by OncoMap or EURACAN) deliver better results – and how to find such centers. ✔ Tumor prostheses and reconstruction How modern tumor prostheses are constructed, when they are used, and how muscles and tendons are “reattached” after surgery – clearly explained with example prostheses. ✔ Limb preservation or amputation? In around 90% of cases, the leg or arm can be preserved. In 5–10% of cases, amputation is more sensible from a functional or oncological point of view. What criteria lead to the decision – and why modern exoprostheses enable a high quality of life today. ✔ Rehabilitation & aftercare What happens after the operation? How rehabilitation helps to regain strength and function – and why long-term aftercare (especially with prostheses) is essential. Important for patients and their families This video is aimed at people with bone sarcomas, their families, and anyone who would like comprehensive information about current treatment options. 📌 You can find more videos on sarcomas, tumor surgery, and rehabilitation on our channel – don't forget to subscribe! 💬 Questions about the video?
