Official name: Keymer Level Crossing - Please note: I mistakenly stood somewhere that the signalling centre deemed it necessary to briefly hang the barriers at 5:04, and I moved back as soon as I realised it was me that caused this to happen. Please do not leave comments criticizing this, and any such comments will be deleted as they're not needed. - Date filmed: 05/04/2022 Videos filmed between 12:43 and 13:02 Route: East Coastway Line (Keymer Jn to Lewes) Closest to Wivelsfield Station and Keymer Jn Location: Junction Road, Burgess Hill Trains featured: Lowering 1 (Starts at 0:00): 1) 2 Class 377s (Southern) - 1:30 (On Mainline) Littlehampton ➡ London Victoria 2) 2 Class 377s (Southern) - 1:55 London Victoria ➡ Ore - Lowering 2 (Starts at 2:32): 1) 2 Class 377s (Southern) - 3:40 Ore ➡ London Victoria 2) Class 700 (Thameslink) - 4:12 Three Bridges TL Up Depot ➡ Brighton (Via Lewes) - Lowering 3 (Starts at 4:54): Class 59 (Freightliner | Hanson Livery) "Village of Great Elm") - 6:03 Newhaven Day Aggregates (FLHH) ➡ Wembley Receptions 1-7 - Lowering 4 (Starts at 6:55): DR 98929 & DR 98979 Multi Purpose Vehicle (Network Rail) - 8:07 Horsham Up T.C. ➡ Horsham Up T.C. Level crossing found within Burgess Hill, West Sussex. It's controlled and monitored from Three Bridges and is located just off of the junction where the section of the East Coastway Line, which runs to Lewes Via Plumpton, splits off from the Brighton Main Line. Faster non-stop trains on the main line need to be given priority to at this junction, so it's not an uncommon sight to see trains stopped just before this level crossing (with the barriers up) whilst they give way to trains already on the mainline, making the activations of this level crossing a tad more difficult to predict too. The barriers here date back to 2019, there is a unique and rather interesting mounting post/bracket for one of the wigwags here, and one of the rather old-looking alarms produces an unusually high-pitched tone. The tight railway bend here (not so tight it needs a guard rail though) means that you can expect quite a lot of screeching as the trains pass over this level crossing. A total of four lowerings are featured in this video. I timed it so well that I got four here in the space of time when I'd've only expected to get one or two. The two hourly Southern Services for this line were joined by an Empty Coaching Stock (ECS) movement from Thameslink running via Lewes, a Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV), and most interestingly of all a Freightliner Class 59 running in Hanson Livery and colours. This was heading from Newhaven To Wembley, and was quite satisfying to catch given that only 15 Class 59s were built. They look vastly the same as Class 66s, but have no central marker light above the cab windows, and their presence (when you're there) is noticeably different too. Thanks for watching!
