From https://www.rojodojo.com I asked one of my senior #bujinkan students to read 日撃 nichigeki from the text and demonstrate. He found the text confusing. This is common because the Bujinkan densho does not contain the full technique! The full technique is densho PLUS kuden, or direct transmission from a teacher. This can only occur if the connection of our Bujinkan lineage is unbroken, from the founders of the art down to Soke Hatsumi, and then to the teachers who train with him. If your teacher does not train with Soke, you will probably be missing something! I can always tell when I see videos or demonstrations from teachers who have not trained with Soke. Because they do the technique wrong. It is obvious they learned it from a video or from trying to decipher the text. Last year in Japan, I was lucky to study 日撃 nichigeki with Hatsumi Sensei, Noguchi Sensei, and Someya Sensei. In the past, I have also done it with Nagato Sensei, Senou Sensei, Oguri Sensei, and many teachers back home. It’s a simple looking counter to a throw, but there is so much to learn with it! As I have written before, “The name nichigeki suggests some interesting strategy. 日 nichi is the sun. And 撃 geki means attack, defeat, or conquer. So you are striking or defeating the enemy with the sun. This happens in two distinct ways. First, as he tries to throw you, I was taught to look up at the sky or the sun to get the correct structure in your body and spine to counter the throw. Second, as you deliver your counter strike, you force the opponent to look up at the sun or sky. His head is slammed back and he will get a face-full.” Next I showed how to open up the space to expose the weakness of your opponent’s position. This can be accomplished simply with kurai dori. So the harder he works to throw, the bigger the effect of your counter. I showed a henka I learned from Hatsumi Sensei. Here you use the frame created by kumiuchi. Then with a subtle adjustment using your own elbows, your opponent is tangled around himself. When he is tied up like this, it is easy to pivot around him. We did one version picking up hon gyaku. And another puts you on the opposite side of his throw. This change actually sends him flying! Of Note: Skill is a stumbling-block on the way to complete understanding in the Bujinkan 00:00 Intro 01:04 日撃 Nichigeki 04:28 背負投 seoi nage 12:01 Hatsumi Sensei style seoi nage 15:45 片手 katate 背負投 seoi nage 18:23 蝦蛄拳 shako ken 20:05 check the hip 24:11 henka from Hatsumi Sensei 28:55 日撃 Nichigeki henka 30:27 半棒 hanbō 33:17 不動の瀧 reflection outro
