This video provides a clear explanation of the front derailleur adjustment process. You'll learn how to properly adjust the front derailleur so you can resolve shifting issues. We'll also cover the big chainring adjustment to ensure smooth transitions. Some bicycles, when you push on the shifter for the front derailleur, the derailleur moves part way toward the larger chainring but does not move the chain onto the large chainring. Another push, and the chain engages the large chainring. In the large chain ring, the same thing happens. Push once and the derailleur moves in about half way toward the small chainring but does not shift the chain onto the small chainring. Push again, and we shift to the smallest chainring. The purpose of the "partial" shift it to decrease chain rub when in the small chainring and smaller cogs; or when in the large chainring and larger cogs. This function is called "trim" and is seen in many Shimano double or compact chainring drivetrains as well a part of the front shifting systems of a few other manufacturers. Some models allow you to bypass this function by pressing firmly on the shifter while other do not. Some times you can eliminate this process by increasing the front derailleur cable tension. If your bike is equipped with a barrel adjuster on the front derailleur shifter, in-line on the cable housing, or on the down tube, turn the barrel adjuster out (counter clockwise) about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. This may the eliminate trim function is some case if it's not desired. Don't turn the barrel adjuster more then this or it may effect the ability to shift from the large to small chainring.
