Tracking the toxic metals left behind by wildfires

Between 2023 and 2025, wildfires burned more than 30 million hectares in Canada. Wildfire heat can change chromium -- a harmless trace mineral in soil -- into a toxic form that may pose a threat to human health. USask researchers used the CLS to watch how chromium and iron react when soils burn. They found chromium switched to its toxic form up to about 600°C, but then changed back by 800°C. The researchers determined that iron in the soil controls when and how chromium becomes toxic. Tracking iron and chromium in soils after fires may be a simple screen for identifying problems.
