Learn the difference between lateral squats and Cossack squats. These two movements are performed very similarly, but there are some key differences. Lateral squats place a greater emphasis on your adductors (inner thighs), while Cossack squats shift the stretch to your hamstrings. With lateral squats, both feet remain firmly planted on the floor. During Cossack squats, you externally rotate your straight leg and point your toe toward the ceiling. This shifts the focus to your hamstrings, and allows you to sit into a deeper squat. Both are great exercises for improving your flexibility and mobility, as well as balance, coordination, and unilateral strength. They also force you to train in the frontal plane, moving side-to-side, a movement pattern that is often neglected but extremely important.
