Harahsheh, Director of the Kawasaki Disease Program at Children’s National Hospital, as he reviews the 2024 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines for Kawasaki Disease. Presented during the KidsHeart Medical Center’s exclusive 2024 symposium, this video outlines updated protocols for diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care. Dr. Harahsheh details the diagnostic process for complete and incomplete Kawasaki Disease, stressing the importance of early lab tests, echocardiograms, and specialist consultation. The session also explores when to use IVIG and aspirin, and how to manage high-risk cases such as infants under six months or those with coronary artery abnormalities. Treatment guidelines vary based on aneurysm size. Small aneurysms are managed with low-dose aspirin; medium with aspirin and Plavix; and large or giant aneurysms may require dual antiplatelet therapy, anticoagulation, and additional medications. In cases resistant to IVIG, updated recommendations favor a 10 mg/kg dose of infliximab over a second IVIG dose, along with other rescue therapies like steroids or biologics. The session also emphasizes the need for parent education, CPR awareness, and clear transition pathways for long-term care.
