On Monday I showed a clip of Harper using PODD by pointing with her finger to each word, this is called “direct access”. If a child has use of their hands or even maybe the use of a fist this is the access method you would use. However, many kids do not have use of their hands or maybe have vision impairment which makes selecting with a finger impossible. This is where partner scanning would come into play. There are three types of partner scanning: visual, auditory plus visual and auditory. For Angela we do a combination of both auditory visual and auditory. In this clip Angela is using auditory plus visual to ask a question. Typically you want both yes and a no. Getting Angela to give clear no’s has been a work in progress for many years but you can see in this clip that her yes nods are very clear. So many ways to access language. None better than the other. Either one of our displays are a robust language system and can be put on high tech as well, we just are not there yet but that is the ultimate goal for all the kids.
