This video talks about the attack on Pearl Harbor and how that moment of crisis dramatically increased tensions between the United States and Japan, while also leading to devastating consequences for Japanese Americans living in the United States. After the December 7, 1941 attack, fear and suspicion spread rapidly across the country. Despite a complete lack of evidence, Japanese Americans were portrayed as disloyal and dangerous, leading to widespread discrimination and the loss of their civil rights. Government officials, media outlets, and even the Supreme Court played roles in justifying actions rooted in fear rather than facts. This video highlights what happens when fear is allowed to override civil rights, as well as challenge us to reflect on how emergencies can be used to justify injustice and why protecting human dignity & rights must always matter.
