The Saint-Étienne tram system opened in 1881, making it the oldest existing tram system in France. From 1952 onwards, only line 4 (now line T1) existed, as a switch to bus service was not possible in the narrow streets of the city center. Starting in the 1960s, this north-south axis was developed into an efficient centerpiece of the city's public transport network, and in 1983, the extension to Solaure became the first new tram section in France since World War II. Further extensions followed in 1991, 2006, and 2019, including one to Châteaucreux railway station. Between 1991 and 1998, a total of 35 articulated low-floor trams were delivered. Their design is very similar to the TFS 2 type, however the basic vehicle structure is more closely related to the Geneva Be 4/6. Due to the narrow streets, they are only 2.10 meters wide. In 2025, 28 of these trams still existed. In 2016, CAF delivered 16 Urbos 3 trams with a striking design, which, at 2.15 meters, are only slightly wider than their predecessors. 0:00 Intro 0:38 Trams in Saint-Étienne 10:10 Ride on a Vevey/Alsthom Saint-Étienne (TFS) tram
