Date filmed: Tuesday the 28th of January 2025 Videos filmed between 16:30 and 17:09 Route: West Anglia Main Line (WAML) Great Chesterford (GRC) is the closest station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Filming location: Ickleton Road, Great Chesterford (CB10 1NX) A level crossing located right near the Essex / Cambridgeshire county border at the edge of the village of Great Chesterford about ten miles south of Cambridge. If you have travelled on the M11 or used the interchange with the A11 at junction 9, you may well have seen this level crossing, as it's right near and clearly visible from it. This is one of a few crossings located next to a low bridge, and it provides access across the railway for high vehicles and cyclists/pedestrians, as using the crossing is much safer than walking underneath the low bridge. The LED's and barriers are slightly newer, but the crossing in its current form otherwise dates back to 1983, and a really old alarm is still going strong. This, however, much contrasts the other sounder, which is only a few years old but already flat-toning. Whilst it still perfectly does its job providing a loud audible warning, these flat-tone alarms always eventually get replaced, as this one has since been. A mixture of services all feature in this video: London to Cambridge, Stanstead to Norwich, and Stanstead to Birmingham trains mainly, joined by an empty unit about to start a peak-time service further south. The West Anglia Main Line has been exceptionally punctual for me during my last few visits, aided by the minimal interface with other lines and overhead-powered electric trains which do not hang around and can easily make up time.
