(13 Sep 1999) English/Nat TOKO MATERIAL The governor of East Timor has dismissed the need for peacekeepers for his violence-wracked territory. Speaking while visiting refugees in West Timor, Abilio Soares said a U-N force only needed to be deployed during a war and stressed no war was going on in East Timor. He also told reporters that he feared that peacekeepers - if deployed - would be unable to remain unbiased. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa-Indonesian) "I think a peacekeeping force is not necessary. A peacekeeping force should only come in when there is a war between two groups. This is not the case here. What we have is a political conflict that should be resolved through politics and not with an armed force." But if it comes in trying to pressure one group and taking sides with the other, we are ready to challenge them. We will never accept that."
