(26 Mar 2002) 1. Zhang Qiyue, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman, walking to podium for press briefing 2. Mid shot of Zhang at podium 3. Cutaway of journalists 4. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Zhang Qiyue, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman, in answer to question about possible cancellation of visit by vice-President Hu Jintao to the United States "After (US President George W.) Bush's visit (to Beijing in February), and in a short period of only one month, the US side has committed a series of erroneous acts interfering in China's internal affairs and harming the development of Sino-US relations. We hope the US side can seriously deal with the serious representation from the Chinese side on these issues. I also want to emphasise that the issue of Taiwan is concerned fundamentally with China's sovereignty and the integrity of its territory. It is also the core and most important issue in Sino-US relations. Any behaviour by the US side contrary to the Three Joint Communiques will have a negative impact on US-Sino relations. We hope the US side can adhere to the One China policy and stick to the Three Sino-US joint Communiques and cease interfering in China's internal affairs by using Taiwan issues and undermining bilateral ties." 5. Wide shot of press briefing 6. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Zhang Qiyue, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman "China strongly opposes any form of official and military contact between Taiwan and the United States. We also want to say that any behaviour from the US side contrary to the Three Joint Communiques will influence the development of Sino-US relations." 7. Mid shot of Zhang at podium 8. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Zhang Qiyue, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman "US-Taiwan agreements are part of a unilateral, domestic US laws - we have opposed them from the very beginning. The basis for Sino-US relations is the Three Sino-US joint Communiques which lay out the principles governing ties between the two countries. They remain the basis for further development of bilateral relations. Both countries have responsibility for following their principles." 9. Wide shot of journalists - pans to podium STORYLINE: Venting anger over recent U-S contacts with Taiwan, China refused to say on Tuesday whether its vice president and expected future leader would go ahead with a planned visit to the United States. Speaking at a regular press briefing in Beijing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue declined to answer when reporters asked whether Hu Jintao's visit, slated for April or May, would proceed. Instead, she accused Washington of committing a "series of erroneous acts interfering in China's internal affairs" following Bush's visit and demanded that Washington cease "using Taiwan issues and undermining bilateral ties." China is upset that Taiwan's defence minister, Tang Yiau-ming, was permitted to attend a private defence convention this month in Florida, though no specific mention of Tang was made at Tuesday's briefing. The trip by Hu Jintao was announced when U.S. President George W. Bush visited Beijing in February The visit is hotly anticipated in Washington because Hu is the heir-apparent to Jiang Zemin, who is expected to retire as China's president and head of the ruling Communist Party over the next year.
