Various of Israeli tanks pulling out- troops waving STORYLINE: Israeli tanks and troop trucks completed their withdrawal from the West Bank city of Ramallah early on Thursday, leaving Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's battered compound and ending his five months of confinement. The pullout was the result of a diplomatic breakthrough that also saw six wanted Palestinians whisked away to a West Bank jail. A dozen US and British armored vehicles pulled into Arafat's compound around sundown on Wednesday, picking up the men as they walked out of Arafat's office building. An hour later, Palestinians lining the street clapped and whistled as the six men arrived at the jail in Jericho, about 22 miles (35 kilometers) away. They will be watched over by American and British wardens. But as that standoff ended, another confrontation took a turn for the worse as fire erupted in the besieged Church of the Nativity compound in Bethlehem. As Israeli soldiers and Palestinians inside battled in some of the worst fighting since the siege of the site began one month ago, troops fired flares above the church. Witnesses say these flares apparently sparked off a blaze in the Orthodox and Franciscan sections of the compound. Three people were reportedly injured trying to put out the blaze. The fire, which broke out a short distance from the 4th-century basilica itself- built over the traditional birthplace of Jesus- burned for about half an hour before it was put out. Speaking to reporters at his office minutes after Israeli tanks lifted their siege of his Ramallah headquarters, Arafat shook with anger at news of the fire, pounding the table with his fist and calling Israelis "terrorists, Nazis and racists."
