In my tasting today I take a look at a 13 year old wine from Barsac. Chateau Myrat Sauternes 2012. I start by explaining why the wine is labelled as a Sauternes, when it is from Barsac. Next I touch on the history of the estate's owners, the de Pontac family, whose ancestors founded Chateau Haut Brion. I then go on to explain how in 1988 brothers Jacques and Xavier de Pontac mounted an incredible effort to replant the estate's vineyards with only a few months remaining before the Chateau's planting rights expired! Before going on to taste the wine I discuss the challenges of the 2012 harvest, the estate and its soils and the quite traditional approach to winemaking at the estate.
