Alcohol and substance use are common comorbidities in bipolar disorder, significantly influencing disease course, symptom severity, and overall prognosis. This talk will explore the importance of recognizing these interactions and their implications on mood stability and functional outcomes. Pharmacological evidence-based treatment approaches and practical strategies for clinicians and individuals with bipolar disorder to address alcohol and substance use challenges, prevent relapse, and enhance recovery will also be discussed. Dr. Nefize Yalin graduated from the School of Medicine, Ege University, Turkey and completed her training in general adult psychiatry and PhD in Basic Neuroscience in School of Medicine, Dokuz Eylul University, Turkey. She worked at Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London (KCL) as a post-doctoral researcher between 2015 and 2020, focusing on neuroimaging techniques in clinical trials and translational psychiatry. She became an academic clinical lecturer in General Adult Psychiatry at KCL in 2020 and was awarded consultant degree in general adult psychiatry also in the UK with endorsements in Liaison and Addiction Psychiatry in 2023. Since October 2023, she has been working at the Experimental Therapeutics and Pathophysiology Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, USA, focusing on novel therapeutics, translational neurobiology, and multi-modal neuroimaging in bipolar disorder.
