Do you have a child who has frequent meltdowns or tantrums? You might be wondering about the best way to help kids navigate strong emotions. One important step is helping kids to understand their emotions by identifying and naming them. Next, we can move on to self-regulation. Why do we lose control of our emotions? Often it's because we lack skills and tools. Before kids are ready to self-regulate, they may need our help. We can offer that help through co-regulation, which involves staying with our child and modeling a state of calm and compassion. We may think our kids are "always" exploding and having tantrums or meltdowns, but often this is not the case. There are times when our kids are calm and happy. As parents we can pay careful attention and watch for patterns to start deciphering contexts and situations that are particularly difficult for our kids. In his book "The Explosive Child," Dr. Ross Greene states that many outbursts are due to lagging skills and unsolved problems that, once identified, can be addressed.
