Firstly, a big warm welcome to Freddy the 14 week old Whippet. Today is Freddy’s first day at the farm. He doesn’t have the social skills or experience like the farm dogs yet, so he’s very timid meeting everyone today. Our packs are very friendly and well mannered so Freddy was in a safe place and he also got lots of reassurance from the humans. We led him through the day on lead because he wanted to run back to the gate. This is not unusual, it’s the first stage where we just have to help him to realise there’s nothing to worry about. The following stages are coming out of their shell, relaxing and engaging in play on the outer of the pack. Then we see what issues might need to be curbed, they then learn the rules, and then finally they join the pack. Each dog goes through the process in varying timeframes. Some do it all in one day, others take months. Freddy was a very lucky boy. He had a little extra help today. In the form of Uncle Yo. I’ll be honest, it chokes me up a little talking about YoYo like this. He’s leaving for his wonderful forever home tomorrow, and you know what? He’s seriously one helluva dog! Why anyone thought to surrender this guy I have no idea. Well we know he had some rough edges, but he’s such a diamond underneath. He is like the poster boy for the Staffy term ‘nanny dogs’. Kids, babies, puppies, little dogs and today … Freddy the timid little Whippet. Well Uncle Yo took him under his wing and showed him all was ok. Stick with me he said, I got your back little mate. Because that’s exactly what Uncle Yo is best known for. He checks in on the kids, stands against them to stop them from falling and licks their wounds. A kid crying is like a fire alarm to him and he rushes over. Today he was there for Freddy. Even when one of the new pups who hasn’t yet learnt the ropes was a little rough in play with Freddy, Uncle Yo came over to stand between them. He sat watch on the hill, and Freddy came over for reassurance, then off again for a play with a loving watchful eye from Uncle Yo behind him. Freddy learnt a lot today. He really began to relax towards the end of the day. Each time he visits he will become more and more confident and learn so much from the pack and Uncle Luke. But he made a special friend today. The type of friend we could all do with in our life. An Uncle Yo.
