https://bfpca.org.au People across Brisbane are impacted by invasive plane noise. We’ve lived on the south side for over 20 years in an old house on a hill. We loved everything about Balmoral. Then one day everything changed. The planes. And they’ve been coming ever since. We had heard they were building the new runway. Information about Brisbane plane noise was scarce. We weren’t sure what it would mean. Only thing was ever made very clear. We were told by people from the airport that the new runway would be good for us. Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance (BFPCA) brings together Brisbane communities adversely affected by Brisbane Airport noise pollution – including aeroplane noise pollution and human health impacts. Our aim is to ensure authorities such as Airservices Australia, Brisbane Airport Corporation BAC and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) take steps to mitigate Brisbane plane noise and provide appropriate Brisbane flight paths. Because more planes would fly over open water, and less over land. That’s what they told us. That’s what we and many people believed. How wrong we were. Because they didn’t tell us everything. We weren’t told that halfway through runway construction the tail wind ruling would be changed from 10 knots to 5 knots. A change that meant more flights landing and arriving over water would be harder to do. But flying over land, over people, suburbs and homes would be much easier for the airlines and airport. Was that the intention all along? Our Brisbane communities have a right to transparent communication and high quality noise abatement strategies regarding Brisbane airport and Brisbane flight paths. There are lower impact alternatives available to Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC), Airservices Australia (AsA), and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) that have not been employed in the design of Brisbane Airport’s network of flight paths. Brisbane Airport flight paths must be designed and used in accordance with best practice. We weren’t told just how many planes would fly over us. How low and loud they’d be, or how frequent. Planes at 1200 feet. Two minutes or less apart. Planes in their hundreds. We weren’t told about the instrument landing system (ILS) either, activated above us to guide planes into land, it’s turned our home into an extension of the runway. Why didn’t they tell us? Why so many secrets? Now our day starts around dawn with screaming jets taking off minutes apart overhead. Until around noon when the constant stream becomes arrivals. Even lower and louder, non-stop up to 10pm. Every day, 7 days a week. The people of Brisbane shouldn’t have to be impacted by plane noise. Other places in Australia implement noise mitigation strategies. Night-time curfews. Caps on flights per hour. Higher tail wind speeds so more planes can fly over water. Why not Brisbane? Perhaps because politicians, airport and aviation authorities are more focused profits than people’s wellbeing. Perhaps because Brisbane’s new runway should never have been built behind such a cloak secrecy, one that continues to reveal more surprises and unchallenged plans for even more plane noise in the future. And as usual, people won’t be told everything. There are noise mitigation strategies that other airports use. Curfews. A cap on flights per hour.Continuous descent operations. Higher tail wind speeds to allow more takeoffs over water. Just to name a few. But the politicians and airport authorities seem to be more focused on profits than our wellbeing. Do we sell and move? Or stay and fight? Time will tell. ABOUT BFPCA The new parallel runway in July 2020 led to a severe increase in plane noise pollution and health impacts on thousands of people in Brisbane. We also want to see effective use of strategies such as SODPROPS to reduce Brisbane's plane noise. Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance (BFPCA) brings communities together to advocate for urgent actions to mitigate Brisbane's airplane noise pollution and other impacts on communities. BFPCA CHARTER BFPCA’s goal is to demand best practice design principles be applied to minimise noise pollution and adverse health impacts from Brisbane Airport’s flight paths on Brisbane residents and businesses, while maintaining the economic benefits of the airport and the aviation industry in Queensland. Brisbane Airport Corporation’s (BAC) community engagement regarding the full extent of the redesigned flight paths was insufficient and misleading. The airspace design and community consultation process for Brisbane’s flight paths failed to properly identify, communicate and reasonably mitigate negative impacts on Brisbane communities.
