In this video, I explain why sex and porn are not addictions and walk through eight real reasons people struggle with out of control sexual behavior. I’m Dr. Joe Kort, a psychotherapist with over 40 years of experience, and I help individuals and couples understand sexuality without shame or pathologizing normal human behavior. Many people quickly label themselves or their partners as “sex addicts” when sexual behavior feels compulsive or out of control. I discuss why the addiction model is not supported by definitive research and why focusing only on that label can actually prevent people from addressing the real underlying issues. I walk through eight common reasons people struggle with sexual compulsivity, including emotional dysregulation, attachment and intimacy difficulties, obsessive compulsive disorder, unresolved childhood sexual abuse, delayed adolescence after coming out later in life, high sexual desire, sexual shame, and rigid kink or fetish patterns. Each of these experiences can look like addiction on the surface, but they require very different therapeutic approaches. I also explain how therapy can help people understand what is really driving their behavior so they can develop healthier emotional regulation, stronger attachment patterns, and greater erotic compassion for themselves and their partners without shaming or pathologizing their sexuality.
