Using CPAP is a big step toward better sleep—but how do you know if it’s actually treating your sleep apnea effectively? This week’s Sleep Byte breaks down the three most important things to check to make sure your CPAP is doing its job: ✅ Your residual AHI – The number of breathing events while on CPAP. Is yours in the normal range? ✅ Your CPAP usage – Are you wearing your mask for your entire sleep time? Even a few hours without it can undo your progress! ✅ How you feel – Are you waking up refreshed and energized? If not, it may be time to make some adjustments. I also share some extra tips to make sure your therapy is working as well as it should—because better sleep means better days! If you’re still feeling tired despite using CPAP, don’t ignore it! A small change could make a big difference. _____________________ Life is better when you get enough quality sleep. Imagine waking refreshed, engaging in your work, and creatively solving problems. Unlike the heavy, foggy feeling of sleep deprivation, adequate sleep generally puts a positive spin on life and allows us to be our best selves. In fact, sleep is as important to well-being as diet and exercise! Over the past 20 years, the science behind sleep has exploded. Dr. Kimberly helps filter and break down this information into simple, practical steps that can start improving your sleep today. KimberlyMD, or Kim Hutchison, MD, is a physician and associate professor of neurology and sleep medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. She completed a fellowship in sleep disorders medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, where she spent her early career studying the effects of sleep deprivation on the brain using functional imaging (fMRI). Kim moved to Portland in 2011 where she joined the faculty at OHSU and combines clinical practice with teaching and exploring her research interests. Named one of “Portland’s Top Docs” for 2014, Dr. Hutchison is active in the frontiers of neurology including online learning and education, innovations in sleep medicine treatment, and increasing access to sleep medicine services in underserved populations.
