Day 1 & Day 2 – The Heart of the Winter Festival When winter deepens in Pangi Valley, the village gathers for Bakaryat Hudan Bhatori Pangi—a sacred winter tradition rooted in community, devotion, and ancient belief. ⸻ Day 1 – The Night of Bakaryat Preparation In the entire village, only two homes are chosen for the making of the Bakaryat—a goat-shaped offering prepared from buckwheat and meat. Every household contributes. Buckwheat and meat are collected from each home, and the presence of one family member from every house is compulsory. As night falls, the entire village comes together. Throughout the freezing night, the Bakaryat is slowly cooked on a stone, using charbi (fat). Two Bakaryat are prepared side by side, symbolising unity and balance. The night never sleeps. Ruh (Raag)—an ancient and sacred chant—echoes through the valley. These melodies are sung only on this occasion, carrying the voices of generations into the cold mountain air. ⸻ Day 2 – Bakaryat Ritual At first light, the Bakaryat is carefully shaped and prepared with ice and fresh butter, marking purity and devotion. By evening, the shamans arrive, and the Bakaryat is taken to its sacred place (sathan) in a collective procession. Near the Shiv Mandir, the priest and selected elders perform the final ritual. Using archery, the Bakaryat is sacrificed—an offering made for protection, harmony, and the well-being of the village. Thus, the spirit of Bakaryat Hudan Bhatori Pangi lives on— not as a performance, but as a living tradition of Pangi Valley. #pangi #travel #traditional #tribal
