In the heart of the West Lindsey countryside you'll find a string of village that begin at the Northern tip of the City of Lincoln which extend northwards along a road called Middle Street which runs parallel to the Roman Road, Ermine Street more commonly known now as the A15. These villages are commonly referred to as the "springline" villages as they were founded on the basis of underground springs which rise from the scarp slope of "The Cliff". The Cliff we have met before. It was mentioned in the Thorpe in the Fallows episode, and it is a ridge of elevated ground that runs from Lincoln, overlooking the Trent Valley. So far, we've seen some villages in that valley, but as of yet, nothing that's on the Cliff itself. All that will change with this one, as a former RAF base was stationed on the Cliff here during the war. Originally created as an overspill for RAF Hemswell, the air base was the home of the Polish Bomber Squadrons and all around the village and close by the air base there are memorials. In 1943, the Polish Bomber Squadrons would fly to various locations in Germany, and none of them would return. The RAF base today is nothing more than just a concrete strip that leads to an industrial estate, because the three runways were all grass. The village is resplendent with lots of nice property as well, in fact most of the notable houses here can be located on the amazing tapestry on the wall inside the village hall, something I was lucky enough to get to see! What makes this village amazing to me is how the old and the new are combined together so well, with the new builds towards the South easily complimenting the older part of the village to the North, as it surrounds one of the Lincolnshire countryside's most celebrated village greens.
