DiKopA Vorträge: S. Fonseca - Online-learning on African Archaeology and Heritage

25.Oktober 2023: Online-learning on African Archaeology and Heritage. The co-creation process of a Coursera MOOC In November 2016, a meeting organized by Teiduma, consultancy on Heritage, Culture, and Sustainability, took place at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. This gathering marked the beginning of a project with a primary objective: the development of an online course focused on African Archaeology and Heritage. The aim of this meeting was to establish a collaborative consortium involving four institutions the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), the ICArEHB at the University of Algarve, the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, and the University of Louisville in the USA. Each of these institutions owned an extensive history of research and partnerships in Africa. Subsequently, numerous other institutions have enthusiastically joined this initiative, including the Eduardo Mondlane University in Mozambique, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain, the University of Namibia, as well as the University of Cologne and its esteemed Heinrich Barth Institute. Despite encountering numerous challenges along the way, including the disruptions caused by a global pandemic, the collaborative effort of over 30 researchers from institutions around the world culminated in the successful launch of the course on the Coursera platform in May 2023. In this presentation, we will delve into the trials and triumphs that paved the way for the realization of this determined goal: the creation of the online course on the Archaeology and Heritage of Africa, and the invaluable lessons we have collected from this endeavor.
