A short video of landing at Flinders Island (YFLI) in very windy conditions with approach over water. This video is a part of the trip to Launceston also available on this channel. 0:00 Nothing but water 0:33 Flinders Island approach 1:07 This is where excitement starts 2:10 Joining crosswind and turning downwind 2:55 Turning final over water 3:10 Landing - it's a bumpy ride Landing at Flinders Island is still one of the most exciting events I have ever experienced as a pilot. After a totally uneventful flight over Bass Strait, I thought the worse was behind us. Thinking that there could have been anything worse than flying over open water, I was looking forward to dinner and a good night sleep after a long day of flying. Little did I know, that the landing that I was about to face would define the whole trip to Tasmania. With only 30 hours or so of solo flying under my belt, I did not anticipate the effect that the wind would have on my approach and landing. The wind was blowing from North East, which in theory sounded great, because it was almost right down the runway 05. What I did not realise, was that the mountain range that was located East from the airport would create massive turbulence that almost ended our little adventure. I was joining the pattern on the crosswind leg and right before the downwind turn, wind shear from the nearby mountain range pushed us down to 400 feet. I applied more power immediately to gain speed and flew out on extended downwind, right above the ocean. The turbulence dissipated on my approach and what was an exciting approach, turned out to be quite a good landing in the end. As per usual, my Piper PA28-181 Archer flew perfectly and did not disappoint. Please check some of my other videos: • From Merimbula to Flinders island.
