This replaces the original Poem 3, "The Wounded Tsarevich." I have inverted and used the introductory phrase in measure 1 to provide a contrapuntal bass line throughout various sections of the piece; have used the main melodic theme in the opening section to provide counterpoint in the alto voice upon repeition; and have made the melody in the mid-section more lyrical whilst cleaning up the inner voices; Finally I have performed it on the Pianoteq 8 New York Steinway, which reduces some of the shrillness in the high registers. The title is a reference to the final chapter of Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov," in which the novel's protagonist, Aloysha, speaks at the burial of a poor schoolboy on a 'still crisp day with a touch of frost.' The dying boy had asked his father to put bread crumbs on his grave so that the swallows might fly down from time to time to keep him company. (c) 2025 by Howard Burchfield III. All rights reserved.
