It’s a new week and a new kite here at Sky Rider Limited. I promise it’s a new kite, even if it looks exactly like the last new kite. This time it’s the third member of the Frank family, Tank. I first flew a prototype of Tank in 2023 I think and I first reaction since John and Devin really didn’t give me much in the way of a primer was “what did you do to Frank, he’s so angry now.” once I got over my initial shock I found a fun if somewhat brutalist old school feel that I enjoyed. Fast forward to the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. A big box of goodies arrived from Iowa and in it was my very own Tank to bash the wind into submission. But how did we arrive at this beastly apparition you might ask? Frank, as you might remember, is everyone’s favorite mellow monster. He’s got that laid-back vibe and a big, steady presence — the perfect choice for Canvas’ first kite shop exclusive. But Frank has a brother. And not just any brother, Tank. Tank may share the same sail as Frank, but that’s where the similarities end. It’s like a Jekyll and Hyde situation — where Frank floats through tricks with a carefree attitude, Tank charges through them with raw authority. You can feel the difference at once. While Frank sticks to a forgiving, slightly bouncy mix of Sky Shark P2X and Crystal Z2s, Tank cranks things up with a brutal switch to Sky Shark P400 Pro and Nitro Strongs. That swap alone turns a smooth ride into something fierce — and if you fly them back-to-back, the change is almost shocking. Tank’s nature isn’t a total shock though, on top of the frame change Tank see’s Franks reverse turbo switched out for a now old school turbo bridle with a surprisingly turbo leg by current standards at that. The result is a kite that keeps a lot of the things that make newer kites fun and accessible wrapped up in a package that is very reminiscent of the team kites I cut my teeth on through the 90s and early 2000s. The team kite feel extends to a crispness, precision and drive that is sometimes compromised for total trick performance in many designers newer offerings. That said Tank is a polyvalent monster, equally adept at tricks as it is at figures. Tank might just be the ultimate all arounder and offers an incredibly enjoyable contrast to some of the other kites in the CKD lineup. Tank isn’t for everyone but for anyone that does connect with it, it will rule the sky. Tank truly is the king of battle.
