What if the way we see each other has been quietly reshaped—filtered, narrowed, and scripted—without us noticing? Using the metaphor of a child’s toy telescope, this talk explores how social media algorithms act as lenses that distort reality, trapping us inside echo chambers where beliefs bounce back louder and more extreme. Focusing especially on how gender expectations are amplified online, the speaker reveals how platforms push rigid identities that harm mental health and deepen division between boys and girls. Drawing on research, lived experience, and sharp cultural observation, the talk shows how outrage thrives when understanding disappears. Rather than blaming individuals, it offers practical ways to step outside the tunnel vision, question the lens we’re looking through, and recover a wider, shared view of the world. At its core, this is a call for digital responsibility, critical thinking, and the courage to listen beyond our feeds. Olivia is 13 years old and a student at Questfield International College. This autumn, she will step onto the TEDx Questfield Intl College Youth stage for the very first time. But before you hear the talk she has prepared, let us tell you a few things about this bright Year 9 student. Olivia loves journaling, cooking, reading, event planning — and she absolutely adores singing and dancing. She has always wanted to be part of something like TEDx; the idea of planning events, preparing for guests, and seeing what happens behind the scenes sounds incredibly fun and exciting to her. If you see her at TEDx Questfield, and she’s not getting ready to go on stage (or already up there giving her talk!), feel free to stop her and say hi — or even ask for directions if you need them. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
