"1/3 of stillbirths were due to a small placenta... But the placentas we examined were not just sort of small. They were extremely small. 85% measured with their estimated placental volume at less than 1st percentile for their respective gestational age. 43% measured less than 0.1 percentile, and about another quarter measured less than .01 percentile." In this video, Beatrix Thompson - research associate at Yale who works with the renowned Dr. Harvey Kliman to identify pathological conditions of the placenta that lead to pregnancy loss - explains the results of research examining the placentas of previously unexplained stillbirths that had been sent to a consult service at Yale University. Through their novel classification system, they were able to determine the cause of 99% of these stillbirths, and were surprised to learn that a shocking number of them were attributable to a small placenta, a previously unacknowledged cause of stillbirth.
